“Early Columbia Lecture Series: Part I, Columbia 1600 – 1850″ Continues

South Carolina State House with statue of Wade Hampton III in the foregroundThe Historic Columbia Foundation will continue the first of its three-part lecture series on the history of Columbia, South Carolina next Tuesday, Feb. 14, with a discussion of the first educational institutions in Columbia.

The talks, held in honor of the Foundation’s 50th anniversary, are led by author and historian Dr. Warner Montgomery.

Early Columbia Lecture Series: Part I, Columbia 1600 – 1850:
Jan 17: Buffalo, Indians, Explorers and Settlers
Jan 24:    The United States’ First Planned City
Jan 31: Columbia’s First Families
Feb 7: Columbia’s First Churches
Feb. 14: Columbia’s First Schools
Feb. 21: The Columbia Canal

Part I of the Early Columbia Lecture Series, which covers the years 1600 to 1850, will end on Feb. 21.

Part II offers discussion of the capital city’s rebuilding efforts from 1865 to 1914 and offers participants the opportunity to view historic sites, including cotton mills, the University of South Carolina Horseshoe, and various Civil War sites.

Next week’s lecture begins at 6:00 p.m. and ends at 7:30 p.m.

Each talk is held at the circa-1796 Seibels House & Garden at 1601 Richland Street in the heart of Columbia’s historic district.
